Home City councillors dress up for Halloween

If you think kids have fun at Halloween, you should see city councillors.
Although councillors voted this week to end Wednesday’s council meeting early for Halloween, that didn’t stop them from bringing a little trick-or-treating spirit on to the council floor during the day.
TTC chair Karen Stintz got the most attention dressed up as Elvira — mistress of the dark — but she wasn’t alone in donning a costume.
Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker — who often champions animal rights causes — dressed up as a puppy dog while conservative Councillor John Parker wore a red clown nose and black hat.

Councillor Sarah Doucette dressed as a peacock from her ward’s High Park Zoo, Councillor Josh Colle dressed as Clark Kent with a Superman costume underneath his mild-mannered dress shirt and Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong had a spiky, dinosaur-looking hat on.
Given all the costumed councillors, it didn’t take long before the jokes started flying on the council floor.
“This meeting has gone to the dogs,” Speaker Frances Nunziata proclaimed as De Baeremaeker chased a tennis ball.
Councillor Doug Ford complained De Baeremaeker was “humping” his leg.
“Stop humping the councillors,” Nunziata told him.
Despite the Halloween laughs, council did make good on its decision to end the day at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday so councillors could go trick-or-treating with their families.
Councillor Adam Vaughan — who voted Tuesday against ending early for Halloween — said if the city is asking firefighters and police officers to work while their kids are trick-or-treating there is no reason council can’t work late as well.
“I look forward to trick-or-treating with my son ... but if I had to work, I think he’d understand,” Vaughan said.
Ford said he didn’t blame councillors for wanting to get home to spend Halloween time with their families.
